A pulse vibrates between rhythm and melody, counting down, ticking like an artificial heart.
Here are sounds of the future, nurtured in the past; psychedelic, electronic, endless.
“Most of the sounds I made were either in the far distant future, the far distant past or in my mind.” Delia Derbyshire
In the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, between the pit of fear and the summit of knowledge. Here lies a different noise.
There is nothing wrong with your receiver.
This is the dimension of imagination. Where everything is black and white, atonal, familiar but unfamiliar.
Here lie practitioners of new music; Vanishing Twin – a stuttering play in camera obscura; Death And Vanilla – soft, malleable, analogue; Jane Weaver – a cosmic traveller lost in space, time and dimension, spinning; Islet – a dreamlike state… offshore, drifting.
We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your receiver.
We are picking up hums and signals from passing satellites; the on-board static-laced “radio” playing timeless “pop”; Virginia Wing, Hater – ethereal, floating, delicate, elegant.
“You take a sound, any sound, record it and then change its nature by a multiplicity of operations.” Daphne Oram
It cuts in and out, punctuated by the thrum of ambient sound mixed with machine noise, like the recordings of Modern Studies And Tommy Perman or Orchestra Of Spheres heard through an upturned dunce hat.
You are about to participate in a great adventure.
“Done at half speed or chopped together from pieces of tape.” © Delia Derbyshire
You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to the outer limits.
