There’s no way we could fit Superchunk’s discography into a sole episode of Secretly Frequencies, and today debuts the first half of our trip through the indie stalwarts’ ouevre. Started by Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1989, Superchunk have released thirteen studio albums, four singles collections, and founded and operate their own resolutely independent label Merge Records.
Mac McCaughan and guitarist Jim Wilbur tag-team with co-hosts Tom Davies and Eric Osmon (Run For Cover Records, Lame-o Records) to cover a couple decades’ worth of music, including unexpected moments of vulnerability with Steve Albini, the evolution of the band’s sound, and friendly ribbing via studio talkback. Tune in, Part 2 coming soon.
