Check out this revealing VFX Breakdown “Realistic bear rigging” from the talented Francesco Gioia. The research focused mainly on trying to achieve realistic deformations. Ziva was used to simulate muscle, fascia, fat, and skin pass, while the skeleton is bound to the joint rig.
